George lies at the foot of the beautiful Outeniqua range and offers an excellent base from which to explore the surrounding area. All the attractions are readily accessible: breathtaking views and spectacular scenery; activities such as walking, hiking, horse-riding and mountain-biking; unique flora, especially fynbos (ericas, proteas and restios) and a particularly rich birdlife. And, just a few kilometres away are some of South Africa’s most magnificent beaches: Victoria Bay (9 km), Wilderness (14 km) and Herolds Bay (18 km), all renowned for swimming, surfing and nature walks.

George is also quickly developing into South Africa's golfing mecca. Indeed, several of South Africa's top golf courses are found in George. Particularly popular is the Fancourt Golf Estate with its 18-hole course designed by Gary Player. This course has hosted a number of high-profile golf tournaments, such as the President's Cup in 2003 and the South African Golf Summits in 2007 and 2008.

Offering top quality accommodation and with a sound infrastructure, George is a favourite choice for conferences, shopping activities and sports events, as well as being a favourite holiday destination. The airport is a mere 10 kms away and national roads link the city with the rest of South Africa.
